Quick answer

To migrate to Shopify without losing SEO or orders, move products first, then customers, then order history, and map every old URL to its new Shopify URL with a 301 redirect before you switch the domain. Test checkout with live orders, keep redirects for at least a year, and watch Search Console for several weeks.

Key takeaways

  • Import in this order: products, then customers, then historical orders, so orders link to the right records.
  • Shopify's free Store Migration app moves products and customers only, so plan separately for orders, collections, pages, blog posts, reviews and SEO fields.
  • Build a URL map from your old sitemap and top Search Console pages, then create 301 redirects in Shopify before you point the domain.
  • Treat payments, GST settings, shipping and COD as part of the migration, and test them with real orders before launch.
  • Keep old redirects live for at least a year and monitor indexing, errors and sales after cutover.

If your current store is slow to change, expensive to maintain or limited by plugins, you may already be thinking about how to migrate to Shopify without hurting sales. The worry is fair: a careless move can break old links, drop product pages from Google and leave customers unable to find their orders.

This guide shows what to move, which method to use, how to protect your search traffic and how to run the cutover. It is written for Indian stores moving from WooCommerce, Magento, a custom build or another platform, with indicative costs in rupees.

What should you move when you migrate to Shopify?

A Shopify migration normally covers products, customers, historical orders, gift cards and store credit, blog posts and content pages. Shopify's Migrate to Shopify guide lists these and notes that a migration is a good time to drop old, low-performing content.

Decide what to move before you pick a tool:

  • Products and variants: titles, descriptions, SKUs, prices, compare-at prices, inventory and images.
  • Customers: names, emails, phone numbers and addresses, with marketing consent recorded correctly.
  • Orders: recent orders for support and returns, and older ones only if you need them in the admin.
  • Content: policy pages, About, FAQs and blog posts that bring organic traffic.
  • SEO fields: page titles, meta descriptions, image alt text and handles.
  • Settings: GST details, shipping zones, payment methods and notification emails.

Not everything deserves a move. A product that has not sold or ranked in two years is a candidate for removal, and a 301 redirect to its category is cleaner than a thin page.

Which migration method should you choose?

Pick the method by catalogue size, how clean your data is and how much SEO value your URLs carry. Shopify's Store Migration app guide compares the main routes.

Method Best for Moves Watch out for
Store Migration app (free) Simple catalogues, fast start Products, variants, inventory, images, customers No orders, collections, menus, SEO data, pages, blogs or reviews
CSV export and import Small stores, cleaned data Products and customers Variant formatting errors, image URLs that no longer load
Partner-led migration Larger catalogues, SEO-heavy stores Products, customers, orders, content, redirects Needs scoping and QA time, costs more
Custom API script Complex or non-standard data Almost anything the APIs support Needs developer time and careful testing

Shopify's own comparison is clear that redirects, meta fields and canonical tags are not handled by the Store Migration app, so they need manual work after import. If your store gets most of its sales from organic search, assume you need more than the free app.

How do you protect SEO when you migrate to Shopify?

You protect SEO by mapping every important old URL to its closest new URL and redirecting it with a server-side 301. Google's guidance on site moves with URL changes recommends permanent redirects and states that 301s do not cause a loss in PageRank.

Shopify fixes its URL patterns, so you cannot keep your old structure. Typical differences look like this:

Old platform URL (example) Shopify URL Note
/product/blue-kurta/ (WooCommerce default) /products/blue-kurta Redirect each product
/product-category/kurtas/ (WooCommerce default) /collections/kurtas Recreate collections first
/shipping-policy/ /pages/shipping-policy Pages live under /pages/
/blog/post-name/ /blogs/news/post-name Blog name becomes part of the path

Build the map in this order:

  1. Crawl the old site and export every indexable URL, plus your sitemap.
  2. Pull top pages from Google Search Console and your analytics, so you know which URLs earn clicks and sales.
  3. Match each URL to a new product, collection or page, and send discontinued items to the closest category rather than the home page.
  4. Create the redirects in Shopify admin under Content, Menus, View URL Redirects, or import them from a CSV file.
  5. Test a sample by opening old URLs in a browser and confirming they land on the right page.

Shopify's URL redirect documentation lists limits that affect planning. You can only redirect URLs that return a 404, you cannot redirect fixed paths such as /products or /collections, and a store can hold up to 100,000 redirects unless it is on Plus. So the old URLs must be broken on the new store before they can redirect.

Also carry over the elements that tell search engines what each page is about: titles, meta descriptions, headings, image alt text and structured data. Our guide to fixing Shopify SEO issues before you run ads covers what to check once the store is live, and the general principles in website redesign without losing SEO apply to any platform move.

How do you move customers and order history safely?

Import products first, then customers, then historical orders, because Shopify says this order is needed so products and customers connect properly to orders. Orders cannot be imported through a standard CSV in the admin, so use a migration app, the Order API or a partner.

Plan for these gaps:

  • Passwords: customers typically need an account invite or reset email, so announce the change in advance.
  • Discount codes and issued gift cards: Shopify's backup and duplication guide says these cannot be transferred by CSV, so recreate or reissue them.
  • Traffic data: old analytics history does not move, so export reports before you switch.
  • Reviews: these are not moved by the Store Migration app, so check whether your review app offers its own import.
  • Pending orders: fulfil or close open orders on the old platform to avoid two systems showing different statuses.

Keep a read-only export of the old store for at least a few months. It helps with returns, GST reconciliation and customer disputes.

What needs to be reconfigured for India?

Payments, GST, shipping and COD must be set up fresh, because they do not come across with a product import. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so you will connect a gateway such as Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree, and Shopify adds its third-party transaction fee on those orders. Our guide to Shopify payment gateways for India explains the fee stack and cash on delivery.

Check these before launch:

  • Tax settings: GST-inclusive prices, your GSTIN on invoices and correct product tax rules.
  • Shipping: zones, rate tables, PIN code coverage and courier integrations.
  • COD rules: order limits, confirmation steps and any COD charge.
  • Checkout emails: order, shipping and refund notifications in your brand voice.
  • Tracking: Meta and Google events so ad reporting does not break on launch day.

What does a safe cutover look like?

A safe cutover is a rehearsed sequence that changes the domain only after the new store is fully tested. Follow these steps:

  1. Freeze changes on the old store a day or two before launch, or agree a short window for edits.
  2. Run a final data sync for new products, customers and orders created since the first import.
  3. Test checkout with live low-value orders for UPI, card, failed payment, COD and refund.
  4. Confirm redirects work for your top 50 to 100 URLs by traffic and revenue.
  5. Remove noindex rules and any robots.txt block used during development, as Google warns these are easy to forget.
  6. Disconnect the domain from the old platform if needed to avoid SSL errors, then connect it to Shopify and set it as primary.
  7. Submit the Shopify sitemap at /sitemap.xml in Google Search Console and check indexing.
  8. Watch the first weeks: track crawl errors, indexed pages, organic clicks, conversion rate and abandoned checkouts.

Keep redirects live for as long as possible. Google suggests at least one year so signals transfer and links from other sites keep working.

How much does it cost to migrate to Shopify in India?

Costs depend on catalogue size, data quality, theme work and whether order history and redirects are in scope. The ranges below are indicative estimates based on typical project scopes, not quotes.

Scope Typical project Indicative cost
Basic Up to a few hundred products, standard theme, products and customers only โ‚น30,000โ€“โ‚น80,000
Mid-size Up to a few thousand products, theme customisation, redirects, selected order history โ‚น80,000โ€“โ‚น2,50,000
Large or complex Many variants, ERP or Tally sync, custom theme, full history โ‚น2,50,000 and above

Shopify subscription, gateway fees, paid apps and any new theme are separate. For wider budgeting, see our Shopify store development cost guide.

How Arham Technology approaches a Shopify migration

Our Shopify development service treats migration as a careful move from a Woo or custom store without losing SEO momentum. The typical process is:

  • Audit and inventory: we review products, variants, customers, orders, content and the apps your current store depends on.
  • URL and SEO mapping: we crawl the old site, prioritise pages by traffic and revenue, and prepare a redirect map with titles and meta fields.
  • Theme build and app wiring: we build the storefront with performance budgets and keep only apps that earn their place.
  • Checkout and operations dry run: test orders check payments, shipping rates, GST-aware taxes and fulfilment notifications end to end.
  • Launch and watch window: we switch the domain, submit the sitemap, wire Meta and Google events and monitor the store after launch.

Our SEO service team can review the redirect map and monitor Search Console during the weeks after cutover.

What should you do next?

Start with an inventory: export your products, customers, orders and top 100 URLs from Search Console, then decide which method fits. If search traffic matters to your sales, ask any agency to show a redirect map and a test plan before you agree a date. To scope your move, read about our Shopify development service and contact us with your platform, catalogue size and current monthly orders.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my Google rankings if I migrate to Shopify?

Not necessarily, but you should expect some movement for a few weeks. Rankings hold best when old URLs redirect one-to-one with 301s, page content stays close to the original and the new site is crawlable. Google says permanent redirects do not cause a loss of PageRank, so the risk comes mostly from missing or wrong redirects.

Can I move my order history to Shopify?

Yes, but not through the standard Shopify admin import. Shopify's guidance says historical orders need a migration app, the Order API or a Shopify Partner. Import products and customers first so each order can connect to them. Many stores only move recent orders and keep the old platform's export for older records.

Can I keep my existing domain when I move to Shopify?

Yes. You can connect or transfer your existing domain to Shopify. Because Shopify uses fixed URL patterns such as /products/ and /collections/, many old links will break unless you create redirects first. Set up the redirects before the domain switch so visitors and search engines land on live pages.

How long does a Shopify migration take?

A small catalogue with a standard theme can move in one to two weeks, while a larger store with a custom theme, order history and integrations often takes four to eight weeks. Data cleanup, redirect mapping and testing usually take longer than the import itself. Treat these as planning estimates, not guarantees.

What does the Shopify Store Migration app not import?

Shopify says the app does not import orders, collections, navigation menus, SEO data, blog posts, pages, reviews, or integrations and apps. It handles products, inventory, images and customers. You must rebuild or move the rest through other methods, and set up URL redirects manually after the import.

Do customers need to reset their passwords after a migration?

Usually, yes. Customer imports carry contact details and addresses rather than login credentials, so plan an account invite or password reset email at launch. Tell regular buyers in advance so they are not surprised, and make guest checkout available during the first weeks.
